Bring the Undead to Life at Pittsburgh’s Zombie Walk
Pittsburgh’s zombie walk first attracted 892 Zombies in 2006. Since then the crawl has grown in popularity with record breaking attendance. On June 24, 2012 Zombies gathered at the Monroeville Mall for the latest zombie fest. Where everyone wore torn clothes and bloody makeup and each zombie slowly walked looking for fresh meat. Some zombies quietly grown, calling for brains. Others simply reach out for their latest victim.
Pittsburgh has become a cult location for zombies. The city features as the setting for many zombie games and films. In particular the Monroeville Mall is massively important in zombie walk lore. The zombie crawl celebrates this by always visiting the Monroeville Mall which was the location for the filming of the 1977 Zombie classic Dawn of the Dead. Because of this the Pittsburgh Zombie fest has much zombie memorabilia from the many films and many zombies travel to Pittsburgh to re enact scenes from their favorite Zombie films or games. For example, the games Urban Dead and Left 4 Dead were both set in Pittsburgh, the films Diary of the Dead, Land of the Dead and the original novel version of Resident Evil are all based near the city.
Zombie fashion includes torn clothes, spattered with blood. Some zombie walkers like to start their crawl dressed normally and are then attacked by zombies and turned into a zombie themselves. There is some debate over whether or not a zombie would have the ability to call out for brains or just walk or crawl, sensing their next victim. People at Pittsburgh’s zombie walk simply follow the example set in their favourite films and enjoy a day and night of zombie walking! This summer the event started at midday and carried on into the night, ending, for over those over 21, with the zombie ball. This means that the Pittsburgh zombie fest is now an event for all of the family.
Over the years the zombie crawl has changed. In the first few years it was an evening fundraising event, raising money and collecting non perishable foods for Pittsburgh’s food bank. This still happens but the zombie crawl now has many other attractions with a Zombie ball, bands, zombie Olympics and filming of the walk. Celebrity appearances are also part of the zombie fest. Appearances have included Ken Foree, he was Peter Washington in Dawn of the Dead. Because of the wide range of activities and attractions, the zombie walk is widely seen as one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh.
