The Experience
There are plenty of places to pick for whitewater rafting in Colorado based on your comfort level. Rapids are organized into class one through six. Class one offers very few rough areas and six is huge waves, drops and many hazards. Most outfitters don’t take passengers on anything above a class five, which is for advanced rafters with experience. Any licensed outfitter you white water raft with will be able to guide you on the best route to take.
If you plan on whitewater rafting on Colorado rapids it doesn't matter if it's high season or low season because these rapids rush all year long, so long as they aren’t frozen over! There are many licensed commercial rafting companies in different parts of Colorado that will take you down the waves. No matter where you pick up the river you will see the scenic beauty of the river valley and the Colorado Mountains.
One of the best places to start the whitewater rafting ride is in Colorado's Canon City. This trek ensures a wild ride and comes with treasured views of the Royal Gorge Canyon. This is one of the deepest canyons in Colorado, the walls tower over 1200 feet. It won’t be hard to keep your eyes wide open when you cruise under the Royal Gorge Bride, the world’s tallest suspension bridge. A lot of history went down this canyon. You will see gold mining remnants, homes of miners and what’s left of the old water pipeline.
You know the Arkansas River rapids mean business with names like Sledgehammer, Wallslammers, Corkscrew and Boateater. If you want to push the bounds in these waters, guides can make sure you get the full experience. With whitewater rafting tricks like high siding your raft will belly up against a rock, forcing everyone to jump ship! (on purpose) Try surfing by paddling upstream in the rapids and riding them back down. There are also some incredible spots for cliff jumping.
