The Experience

Schlossberg is also known as the Palace Mountain and is located in Graz. A tourist area and it is the heart of Graz. It is a green island, located at the top. Formerly built to be a fortress town, this place has its own mesmerizing beauty. The symbol of the town is the clock tower on the mountain. This structure was built in 1560. One of the oldest bells of the country known as the Lumpenglocke resides here on the top of the tower. The watch hands on this tower are actually inverted. The big hand of the cock indicates the hours and the small hand, the minutes. It helped the people of the town tell the time easily even from a far off distance. There are other popular bells like the Liesl and the Hackher Lowe as well. Leisl is the popular bell tower of the town as she represents the Holy Elisabeth.

The Hackher Lowe is monumental for the Towns defense against France in 1809. At that time the leader of the place was Franz Hackher and that is why the Bell tower was named after him. The Urhturm, or the Clock Tower is about 28m tall. Even today after 5 centuries the clock works with great accuracy. If you want to get a picture postcard view of Graz, you should climb the clock tower. However the climb can take a few hours. Carry enough water along with you. It is a public park, so most amenities are available before you get onto those stairs.

Once you are back, plan on eating in the outdoor restaurant on the hill top. It offers amazing views of the city of Graz. There are two more small cafes which offer you refreshments. Close by is an ancient Turkish well and was built when the city was under siege. There is an open air stage in the cellar that is often used for holding concerts and shows. There are two bastions and bell towers also. There is an elevator to take you to the top build inside the mountain. The more challenging and interesting way is to take the steps and the pathways.

The best ways to visit the city of Graz is by a bicycle or a tram. You can walk around the city too if you like. The Cobblestone pathways lead you pretty much to the destination. You can never get lost here. A car is useless here, so avoid it if you can. Graz is a city full of cyclists and you will find several people on their bicycles. Graz is a city designated as a World Heritage Site.

The best time to visit is in spring, when the weather is super fine and flowers in full bloom. The city’s beauty is more in this season. You will require regular tourist clothing, like jeans or shorts along with a Tee Shirt. It is the best attire. Always carry walking shoes. Carry enough water with you. Food and drinks is not a problem, but mostly soda is more popular than water.
