Snacking on Salt Water Taffy on the Jersey Shore

Published on June 24, 2013 by Carol Jackson Parsons

Country: United States

The Experience

From Keansburg to Cape May, the New Jersey shore is one of the best places to travel. People flock to the shores of Jersey from all over the world. All along the coast there is no shortage of fun things to do in the summer at the Jersey Shore. One of the things people love to do is eat, and one of the favorite things to eat is Jersey Shore Saltwater Taffy. As you walk any of the boardwalks, go through the amusement parks, or shop, you will smell the luscious smells of the gourmet saltwater taffy. People pick up bags of taffy of many colors and flavors. Kids carry their bags of taffy proudly down the boardwalk with their mouth and cheeks full of the tasty candy.

No one really knows where saltwater taffy originated. Many rumors exist, but the first record is that Joseph Fralinger made the candy very popular in Atlantic City. He manufactured the candy to sell to boardwalk visitors, and he wrapped them up so they could take them home. This made him the Saltwater Taffy King. The candy is now well known along the boardwalk. Everywhere you look, you see the colorful candy and the smell of the taffy wafts out to tempt people into buying it.

As you walk any part of the New Jersey boardwalk, you will smell all the other popular scents of sugary candies, pastries, corn dogs, sand, and water. You will hear people laughing and talking, seagulls squawking, the waves rushing up on shore, and depending on where you are, music and amusement park rides. You will see the water, people, sand, bright lights, little shops, amusement park rides, and even little passenger trains to get you where you want to go. But most of all, you will be tempted to enter the stores that carry the colorful, sweet smelly taffy.

Where to Get Your Saltwater Taffy

One of the best places to stop and get your taffy is Shriver’s in Ocean City, though there are others. From outside you can sniff the sweet smell that tempts you to enter their doors. The people are as sweet as their candy and if by chance you can’t get there, you can order a little piece of the Jersey Shore to be sent to your house from their website. With dozens of flavors, you will have plenty to choose from as you walk away with a smile on your face.
