The Experience

Mona: Focus on some places where sailing can be done in the US and get rid of the some of the how to stuff and history.

Sailing a schooner is an art that has to be perfected and very few manage to do that. Apparently there aren’t any masters who are willing to teach either. However it is not that difficult as it sounds. Schooner, as a boat is quite an easy one to handle compared to other vessels in its league. It is a forgiving thing and understands the waters well. It will take time but with patience and perseverance even this art can be perfected.
If a person has moderate level experience in sailing a catamaran or a sail boat then sailing a schooner is fairly easy. Smaller schooners are better for beginners like the gaffers for example. A schooner has a different set of characteristics and one mainly has to understand these in order to learn. When you begin to sail on this boat, your experiences can be different and unique. So what one has to teach you, may actually never work for you. The mainsail of the boat guides the steering. So as a sailor you have to have your eye on both. As the wind becomes heavier, it forces the mainsail and pushes the stem leeward. When you want a better control of the boat, you will have to ease the main sheets. In order to head up the main sheets have to be eased further.
There are other factors that influence while sailing a schooner. The keel shape of the boat also affects the quality of the sail. The rudder size and the position will dictate how the boat behaves on the waters. Every time you reduce or increase the size of the main sail you will find a different experience. The sails on the schooner are small and can be handled by a single person very easily. There are some advanced vessels which perform this action through a single button. For a beginner sailing in rough weather is not advised. However in order to learn the sheets one has to get out into a storm sail.
A schooner was introduced by the Dutch somewhere in the 16th century. The fore and the aft are the main characteristics of the vessel. The forward masts are shorter than the tail masts. So identifying the vessel is not difficult. When the Dutch brought the vessel to America in the 17th century, it was further developed. In North America many people took an instant liking to the boat and kept improvising on it. In fact the schooner has a high relevance to why the North Americans love sailing so much. The double masted schooners were widely used by the Americans. Even today at the heart of a sailor, this vessel will find a special place. Schooners Wharf is plenty in the United States. It is easy to dock if you live by the waters. The schooners are also pilot vessels favored by many. The wide variety available, suits almost everyone’s needs in a unique way. Sailing a schooner is an enthralling experience even for a novice.
