Make Your Skin Shine With a Traditional Hammam in Marrakech
Created on November 01, 2010 by Morgan Squires, WriterMorocco is a land that has eternally been a crossroads link between Europe and Africa. As such, it is a country that is fabulously rich in culture, and provides many Europeans with an insight into Islamic lifestyles and traditions. One of these traditions is known as “hammam,” often referred to as a “Turkish bath” to many people. Hammams were once viewed as an essential part of the life of a practicing Muslim. The religious significance of complying with the Islamic laws of hygiene and purification meant that many people visited the hammam prior to going into a mosque. Thus, a traditional hammam is actually separate for men and women, though many (especially those which cater for tourists) now allow for both men and women. As ...
Sit With A Tiger’s Head In Your Lap
Created on November 01, 2010 by Morgan Squires, WriterWhat is the thing you first think of whenever you visit a new country? For many people it’s often the local fauna: kangaroos in Australia, pandas in China, grizzly bears in Canada, lions in South Africa. For me, in Thailand, it was tigers! I booked a tour from my Bangkok hotel, and got on a bus to head north to the Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno Forest Monastery: the Tiger Temple. Located in Kanchanaburi, which is a 2-3 hour bus ride north of Bangkok (depending on traffic), the Tiger Temple was established in 1994 by a meditation guru after whom the temple is named. It is a wildlife sanctuary, filled with a range of wildlife such as peacocks, wild boar, water buffalo, and of course—tigers. ...
Enjoy a Classic Québécois Poutine in Marvellous Montréal!
Created on October 25, 2010 by Morgan Squires, WriterWhenever I travel to a new country, I always try and taste the local food—whatever that may involve. Sometimes you get completely grossed out, and sometimes you hit the jackpot. Often it involves something that has a slightly different approach to it, and it makes you wonder why you didn’t come up with the idea yourself. Montreal 's Poutine is one of those examples. Poutine is a staple of the Canadian province of Québec that was invented in the 1950’s. It’s quite simple, French fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. Now, while this may sound quite innocuous, it really can be incredibly delicious (especially at 3 a.m!), and depends quite a lot on the quality of the fries, the thickness of the gravy, and ...
Take in a Classic Play at London's West End
Created on October 25, 2010 by Morgan Squires, WriterLondon is the home of one of the world’s greatest theatre districts—the West End. Like Broadway in New York, London’s West End is synonymous with famous plays, musicals and grand productions. Great shows like Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables have remained so popular, that they have been running non-stop for 24 and 25 years respectively! As popular as they are, these shows are dwarfed by the long-running Agatha Christie play The Mousetrap, which has been running since 1952! London’s West End theatre district can mean a large area of central London, including Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, and other notable places. At the heart of the London West End show scene the corners of Shaftesbury Avenue, Drury Lane, and The Strand stand ...
A Bone-Chilling Experience Awaits at the Capela dos Ossos, Portugal
Created on October 26, 2009 by Morgan Squires, WriterFaro in southern Portugal is a great town to soak up the atmosphere of the Algarve. One of the attractions here is a visit to the Igreja do Carmo: a church in Faro famous for its Capela dos Ossos (“Chapel of Bones”). Located a short walk from the old town of Faro, you can see the Igreja do Carmo as you walk up the hill, in the middle of a plaza. It isn't open all day, and closes through the middle of the day, so time your arrival accordingly. At around 3.30 p.m. the Igreja do Carmo re-opens, and as you walk down the wooden aisle, the ominous creaking of floorboards builds the suspense for the main tourist attraction. Taking a right halfway down the ...
