Well, I'm new to the travel writing scene. I graduated college with a Bachelor's in English/Journalism. Instead of using my degree, I took at job as a flight attendant and have seen much more of the world that I ever thought possible for my age. My first international trip took me to Africa when I was nineteen, and I cannot wait to go back there again one day. Whether you're there to help others or experience the culture, it's a journey you'll never forget. It's been the most amazing trip I've taken to date. Right now, I'm just waiting to see what the future holds... hopefully a lot more unique experiences.

Walk Amongst the Clouds Atop the Sydney Tower

Created on March 07, 2010 by Courtney McConnell, Writer

Towering more than 260 meters above Sydney, at almost six times the height of Niagara Falls, the Sydney Tower is nearly impossible to miss walking through the city. From atop the observation deck, striking views take you through the Harbour Bridge, over the Sydney Opera House, past sprawling beaches, to reach the soaring Blue Mountains in the distance. Great for kicking back and enjoying the scenery, or simply taking in a view found no where else in Australia, the Sydney Tower gives you a unique perspective over an exceptional landscape. Opened in 1981, after seven years of construction, visitors can reach the observation deck of the Sydney Tower by taking a 40 second elevator ride. For the more adventurous and fit, there is also the ...

Catch a Bird's Eye View of the Rainforest in Kakum National Park

Created on June 01, 2009 by Courtney McConnell, Writer

My heart pounds as I look over the landscape. Taking the first step is key to one of the greatest experiences I'll have in Ghana, if I can just get over the height. One deep breathe in and I'm going for it. Stepping onto the first bridge feels like freedom in the sky. It's a shaky freedom for me but freedom nonetheless. Exploring Kakum National Park in central Ghana provides an exhilarating close look at African nature. At 40 meters high in some areas, taking a canopy tour over the Kakum rainforest feels like a walk in the clouds. North of Cape Coast, Kakum National Park offers this incredible experience year round, and it’s the only tour of its kind in Africa. Seeing a view ...

Get Locked into History at the Elmina Slave Castle

Created on June 01, 2009 by Courtney McConnell, Writer

As the door slammed shut, a wave of claustrophobia enveloped the thirty-two people crammed into a dingy cell at the Elmina Castle on the Ghanaian Gold Coast. The cells here are no bigger than an average closet, and the only light which can be seen from the inside is a small square of light at the door. Everything inside the cell was black and quiet except for the breathing of those people around me. A few moments later, the door swung open and my lungs breathed in fresh air with relief. The staggering moment came when our tour guide informed us that as many as one hundred people used to end up in this cell before going on to their final destinations. It sounds like ...

Time for the Big Chimes of Big Ben, London

Created on May 28, 2009 by Courtney McConnell, Writer

Stepping out of the London Underground at Westminster, you may be caught off guard by the sheer size of Big Ben as it immediately confronts you. Although it may seem child’s play to take a photo of such a looming stationary subject as one of the world's largest clocks, it actually involves some photographic tact and maneuvering. Neighbouring the former Palace of Westminster, which was destroyed in 1834, Big Ben was included as part of the new Westminster rebuilt in 1844. Big Ben first rang out over London on May 31, 1859, but the bells cracked just two months later. Rotated and replaced with a lighter hammer, this is the bell we hear today. The name “Big Ben Clock Tower” is really more of a ...

Throw Colours to the Wind at the Holi Festival of Colours in India

Created on February 18, 2009 by Courtney McConnell, Writer

Imagine you're walking down a city street in India. Spring has arrived and the sun is shining brightly. The level of excitement in the air is contagious. From around the corner a child runs out and throws a water balloon at you, giggling as he runs to find his next target. Beam Over the Breaching Whales at the Hermanus Whale Festival

Created on February 18, 2009 by Courtney McConnell, Writer

Every year Cape Town, South Africa hosts a wondrous celebration to welcome back the Southern Right Whales to Walker Bay. These majestic mammals intrigue and astound any and all that have the opportunity, or should I say privilege, to see them. Booming in popularity the Hermanus Whale Festival outgrew its original name, 'Whale of A Festival’; surging on to become the most acclaimed Enviro-Arts Festival in the country. During the winter and spring season the Southern Right Whales return from their Antarctic migration and dance along the shorelines of the Hermanus Coast for all to enjoy. Spottings are frequent and to help ensure that you catch an excellent show, the town of Hermanus employs a "whale crier" to walk through town announcing the latest locations ...

See the Tallest Trees in the World at the Redwood National and State Parks of California

Created on January 10, 2009 by Courtney McConnell, Writer

Driving along the California coastline into the Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) can bring you abruptly out of the crystal clear blue skies and glistening ocean into a dark canopy of giant trees. For a moment, it seems as if the redwood forest is a city of trees soaring taller than a New York City skyscraper. After all, these are the tallest trees in the world! The Redwood National and State Parks is a UNESCO world heritage site spread over 131,983 acres and encompasses four separate areas: Prairie Creek, Del Norte, Jedediah Smith State Parks, and Redwood National Park. Within this area is 45 percent of the world's remaining Coastal Redwood Forest. Redwood National Park is the place to go if you're into outdoor ...
