Hike the Head of a Beast at Lion's Head Mountain, Cape Town

Created on November 23, 2009 by Cassandra Shaw, Writer

Although it’s a fairly unknown destination for most tourists, a trip to the top of Cape Town’s Lion's Head Mountain is a must for trekkers in the area. Situated between the famous Table Mountain and Signal Hill, Lion's Head is a valuable part of the Table Mountain National Park. The uniquely descriptive name, Lion's Head (Leewen Kop), was given by early Dutch settlers during the 17th century due to its likeness to that of a sphinx or lion, while Signal Hill was dubbed the lion's tale (Leewen Staart). Rarely does a hike live up to a promise of non-stop breathtaking views. But, elevated 669 meters above sea level, hiking Lion's Head Mountain does just this, with soaring views of Table Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay, ...

A Case in Point: Cape Point Nature Reserve, South Africa

Created on November 23, 2009 by Cassandra Shaw, Writer

There’s nothing better to do on a hot summer day in South Africa then to visit Cape Point Nature Reserve on the Cape Peninsula, a place synonymous with wind. Explorer Sir Francis Drake claimed that Cape Point was “The most stately thing and the fairest Cape [he’d seen] in the whole circumference of the earth.” Although he witnessed the Cape over 400 years ago, the man wasn’t lying! This famous section of the Table Mountain National Park, close to Cape Town, has over 7,750 hectares of untouched wildlife, and 40 km of coastline. The overall space and diversity of this expansive reserve is amazing. Cape Point Nature Reserve is filled with rocky cliffs, white sand and pebbled beaches, as well as long stretches of land ...

Scooter Around the Scenic Amalfi Coast of Southern Italy

Created on June 30, 2009 by Cassandra Shaw, Writer

The Amalfi Coast of Italy is a must-do drive that runs along the southern coast from Positano to Vietri Sul Mare. It consists of thirteen UNESCO World Heritage Site towns, and although it is a fare distance from the the hub of tourism in Italy, it is well worth the trip. Starting in the lemon-tree-lined city of Sorrento, make your way along the cliff-clinging roads that follow the unrelenting shoreline of turquoise waters. Here at the starting point of your Amalfi Coast tour you can sip some of the area's famous limoncello liqueur while enjoying incredible views of Naples and historic Mount Vesuvius across the bay. Onwards along the Amalfi Coast, the views only become more impressive. The narrow roads often widen into large rest ...

Raft the Wild Nile

Created on May 29, 2009 by Cassandra Shaw, Writer

It was late morning in Jinja, Uganda when our Nile River rafting guide first belted out “White Water Ahead!” Despite having just been taught a lesson in the dos and don’ts of white water rafting, my mind went completely blank, and my body completely numb. Up until this moment, the thought that we’d be riding down some of the worlds most hectic rapids Nile River rafting hadn’t even crossed my mind. Luckily I wasn’t alone, no one, other than the guide, had ever been down a river before. Our fear was intense, and before hitting the first rapids, the atmosphere on the boat was electric. Regardless of our apprehension, the raft surged forward in the strong current, and we were suddenly deep in an explosion ...
