Biju is an American freelance writer based in Xiamen, China. Formerly a teacher in Thailand and South Korea, he currently roams the streets sampling Fujian food, culture, and nightlife as the head writer of Xiamen Wave Magazine, the premier guide to Xiamen. When not writing, Biju attempts to experience Asia to the fullest, from visiting temples in South India and Tibet and hiking in Indonesia, to eating poisonous puffer fish in Japan and scuba diving in Vietnam.

Whenever I travel, especially to the East, I get this overpowering urge to eat bizarre delicacies. Something about the local fare, the tentacles squirming in buckets at neighborhood markets, strange new meats, and steam rising off grills charring unrecognizable animal parts gets my blood pumping - it almost makes me feel that, despite the McDonalds and KFCs at any given corner, I'm actually traveling to places that are authentically different from where I grew up. Climbing Tibet’s Potala Palace at 3,700 m (12,100 ft), is a difficult task indeed. The Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, made famous as the winter residence of the Dalai Lama until 1959, was first built by a Tibetan king in AD 637, and used primarily as a meditation retreat. Potala Palace was rebuilt in 1645 to be used as the fifth Dalai Lama's seat of government. Today, Potala Palace is situated between two major monasteries in old Lhasa, and is a museum housing thousands of shrines, statues and manuscripts within its countless rooms.
