Venture by Camel Caravan to Palmyra, Syria

Published on January 17, 2012 by Mona Rae, Writer

The Experience

Palmyra is an ancient town in Syria, about 200 km from Damascus, where the Palmyra Camel Caravan event is celebrated. It is very important to Syria because of it's rich history of caravan travellers that stopped there to trade diamonds, gold, pearls and silver. Sometimes mistaken for a mirage, Palmyra's eden would appear from the glistening sands draped in gold. Aside from its opulence, Palmyra is also famous for its tombs that hold the remains of many great rulers of Syria. One may be intrigued to know how interesting the Palmyra Camel Caravan trip can be...

One of the ways to discover the desert and the oasis is on the back of a camel, and a camel caravan in Palmyra typically carries a lot of eager explorers. You can meet the native Bedouins, and absorb the breathtaking landscapes of the desert. The fields of lava which formed as a result of volcanic eruptions offer a great colour contrast to the landscapes. At dusk you can sit around with the Bedouins, hear music and watch dancing.

There are several camel caravan trip organizers in Palmyra who will take you on desert tours. Palmyra has a rich wealth of heritage and architecture, but everything is located in the desert. You cannot walk in the desert sands of Palmyra as it is almost like trying to walk on the ocean. Travel has to be via a desert vehicle… such as a camel. The tour of Palmyra is typically arranged for three to five days, and during this period you can expect to have Arabic dinners and luxurious stays in Bedouin tents. Bedouins are the native tribes, and their culture can often be pretty hard to understand. They believe in occult and spirituality, and are generally very interesting people with lots of desert stories to narrate.

The Palmyra camel caravan trip starts and ends in Palmyra. Syrian palaces are well worth a visit, and each one has been designed with rich architecture, precious stones and rich colour. The Abassia hot water spring is another place you come across on Syria tours, and great medicinal value is attached to the water from this spring. Given the scarcity of water in the desert, the water from the springs is considered sacred. You also get to visit the Qasr al-Heir Al-Sharqi and other age-old caravans of Halabat.

When to Go to Palmyra Camel Caravan

The best times to visit Palmyra are in the spring and autumn.

Odds n' Ends

Throughout the Palmyra caravan trip, Bedouins escort you and offer valuable information about the desert. The Bedouins are warm people who treat their visitors with great care and attention. It’s necessary to carry desert-friendly clothing, such as light cottons and linens, and since you will be expected to walk for a bit in the desert, it is best to wear shoes that cover your feet completely.
