Birds of a Feather Flock Together at Jurong Bird Park in Singapore

Published by Mary Chong, Writer

Country: Singapore

The Experience

You don’t have to be a bird watcher or bird lover to enjoy your day at Singapore's Jurong Bird Park. Home to approximately 8,000 birds from 600 species, the beautifully landscaped Jurong Bird Park located in the west end of Singapore contains the world’s largest collection of birds, and is perfect to spend a leisurely day.

Open daily from 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m., the grounds of Jurong Bird Park encompass 50 acres. There is an air-conditioned monorail ride called the Jurong Bird Park Panorail with recorded commentary, and which circles the entire park for an extra fee, although Jurong Bird Park can easily be toured on foot. There are three stations where you can hop off, tour around and then hop back on.

Within Jurong Bird Park, there are four aviaries where the birds are allowed to fly free. So, instead of looking at them from outside the wire cage, you get to enter and walk among them. Remember the scene from the movie Jurassic Park where they enter the pterodactyl cage? There are no pterodactyls here… but don’t forget to duck and look up as the birds fly around, and watch that you don’t let any of the birds escape when you open the “cage door”. Don’t think that you’ll miss out if you are touring via the panorail ride. Jurong Bird Park is the only park in the world that has a monorail that actually runs through an aviary.

One aviary of note is the 3,000 m², 9 storeys high “Lory Loft”. Here, approximately 1,000 bright and colourful lorikeets fly about to everyone’s delight. Purchase cups of nectar and they will land on your arms, shoulders and hands, and drink as you hand-feed the birds. There are other feeding opportunities outside of the Lory Loft at the flamingo pool and the ostrich area as well.

Education and conservation of the species is the main goal of Jurong Bird Park, and special shows reinforcing this mandate occur throughout the day. These shows feature trained birds and their handlers, and are perfect should you need a break and some rest, but be advised that they are mostly aimed at children.

There are lots of great viewing areas like “Pelican Cove” and the picnic area near “Flamingo Lake” where you can sit in the shade and pass the time as you spend a day with the birds. It’s surprising how much time you can spend in this Jurong Bird Park. The time just flies…
