The Experience
Saint Helena is home to one of the most embarking journey of an animal called the Green Turtle Migration. They really travel great distances and for such a slow migratory creature, the distance they travel is simply unbelievable. All the living organisms migrate but none like the Green Turtle. These turtles are originally found in Brazil in the shallow waters. These turtles are very unusual creatures to understand. A lot of them lay their eggs on the Ascension Island, which is a remote island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Ascension Island is a part of Saint Helena. The amazing thing about these turtles is that they live on Brazilian coast, but to lay eggs they start their Migration to Saint Helena which is 2000 miles away from Brazilian coasts. It is a very difficult task as equatorial currents run across in the Atlantic Ocean. It is still complicated to understand how these turtles manage it.
If you wonder why these turtles should lay their eggs on this island, the answer is pretty simple. Ascension Island is mostly sandy and the turtles can easily hide their eggs in the sand. Also there are no predators on this island and their hatchlings will be safe. For these simple reasons the turtles cross great distances. The green sea turtles are an endangered species because of the severe poaching that takes place. However such problems are not a part of Saint Helena. People here adore these animals and take efforts to conserve them. Thousands of turtles lay their eggs and sometimes conservators witness nearly 15000 hatchlings. It is interesting to watch the hatchlings also as they rush into the sea to find their way back home.

- As the door slammed shut, a wave of claustrophobia enveloped the thirty-two people crammed into a dingy cell at the Elmina Castle on the Ghanaian Gold Coast. The cells here are no bigger than an average closet, and the only light which can be seen from the inside is a small square of light at the door. Everything inside the cell was black and quiet except for the breathing of those people around me. A few moments later, the door swung open and my lungs breathed in fresh air with relief.
