The Experience

A visual ecstasy on sunny days, the fresh waters of Erawan Falls pour over limestone rock and collects into 7 refreshing pools, begging visitors to stop and relax in its cool water. The falls are said to resemble the 3 headed Elephant Erawan from Hindu mythology and is also the name sake of this work of nature. A series of paths and footbridges lead you to the various 7 tiers of Erawan Falls and are quite the adventure in and of them self. If you are looking to go right to the top be prepared for some intense uphill sluggin’ and steep steps, but once near that last 200m to the top, the view is truly one of paradise. Erawan Falls are quite popular and often take on a carnival charm during the Songkran Festival, Thai New Year, April 13 – April 15, so if you are looking for a more solitary experience it might be best to avoid this time for visiting. The falls are apart of the Erawan National park which is located in the Si Sawat district of Kanchanburi Province, Western Thailand. Erawan National Park spans over 550 square kilometers and offers an abundance of serene backdrops with countless beautiful flora and fauna, perfect for trekking and relaxing leisure walks.

When to Go to Erawan Waterfall

The cool season between November to February has comfortable temperatures of 30°C with little rainfall and is widely considered the best time of year to visit Thailand. Over the Christmas month of December prices increase drastically for accommodations, so to take advantage of good weather with more bang for your buck, February is a great month to visit. As you head into March, April, May temperatures rise and regularly range between 35°C and 40°C, with high humidity levels as well. If you are looking for a glance into the culture of Thailand, be sure to catch the Songrkan New Years festivities between April 13 - 15, where humidity is chased away with mass celebratory water fights.

Odds n' Ends

Entry fee to the park is 400 baht, or approximately $13.00 Canadian, if you are looking to take a local bus tour the cost is in the 600 baht range which is approximately $20.00 Canadian There are several local stands in the park where you can purchase meals, snacks and beverages for your treks. Buses leave Kanchanburi on regular basis but it is strongly recommended taking an early leave, around 8am, as you will need a full day to fully enjoy your experience and also get a head start on the more lackadaisical tourists. The last word of caution for those endeavoring this encounter is that this is a hands on wildlife adventure, you can experience monkeys and butterflies above your head as well as nibbling fish at your feet while plunging into the pools, so keep in mind you won’t be alone!
