Country: Switzerland

The Experience

A country seen as “paradise on earth” worth visiting by any person at least once in a lifetime because of its beauty, people and luxurious way of life. Contrary to popular perception that Switzerland is all modern buildings and places, it is in fact teeming with crystal clear lakes and lush green forests. Its snow capped Alpine peaks are visible all year round, a view that can only appreciated in a country once known during the Roman Empire as Helvetia. Switzerland is where balance of nature and modern lifestyle meet in a serene harmony. This is what separates Switzerland from other places on earth. It is because of this balance people here are staying and visitors are coming just to experience this rarity. It is a magnificently mountainous country with the remaining land area covered with lush green forest.

Switzerland is chocolates, cheese, designer watches, advanced banking, the Swiss Alps, cows and milk and many, many other things that made this wonderful country of absolute freedom worth visiting. Switzerland’s magnificent history can be felt and seen in its many great museums which are open all throughout the year. Its glorious temperate climate which is the best in all Western Europe allows its people and tourists to admire its exotic places in all types of seasons.

If you are one of the people who had time enough to book a guided tour, then here is the current itinerary being offered by CERN:

Accelerating particles, where do particles for the LHC come from? (LINAC, LEIR)
Detecting particles (COMPASS)
Discovering antimatter (AD). You will visit the decelerating ring (when the machine is shut down), the control room and experiments.
The particles of the cosmos (CAST and AMS)
Around the LHC: magnets, cryogenics and vacuum (SM18)
Information technology, calculations and communication. from the World Wide Web to the Grid (Computer Centre and the Atlas Control Centre)
The accelerators of the future (CLIC)

If, however you were just passing by and decided to visit CERN, then all you have to do is go straight to the reception and CERN employees would be happy to help you in touring their facilities. Just remember that there are certain places and facilities that are only available on advanced guided tour booking.

Switzerland, fortunately, has the most favourable climate in the whole of Western Europe. Its climate especially during summer and spring are wonderfully mild and where you can still see the Swiss Alps still visible with their ever snow white tips. It is a perfect time to go around shopping in Geneva and Zurich and then go berry picking in some towns just outside the city.

When to Go

If there is a place historic in these modern times, it’s probably that famous rustic globe in the middle of Geneva. CERN is an iconic place today because of its significant discovery in 1989, the very wide world of the web. World Wide Web (www) was discovered or invented by a CERN Scientist, Tim Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee was trying to find a way for scientist all over the world, in international laboratories, institutes and universities, to have instant communication and interaction to be able to have instant information sharing about their work.

Just like NASA in the US and other huge and significant scientific facilities all over the world, CERN is open to public tours most especially for students who want to learn more. Certain CERN facilities can be viewed year round either in a scheduled and guided tour or spur of the moment visit. Whichever you chose of have time to prepare for, the tour will certainly satisfy your curiosity.

Upon seeing the rustic iconic Globe that represented CERN, one is immediately transformed into an unbelievably hi-tech movie seen. The Microcosm, which was a museum about science and development and other vital experiments at CERN had a multimedia exhibits that was very “hi-tech” and exactly everything expected from an advanced scientific facility. Just walking inside it made tourists feel they’re not in an ordinary building or office.

Odds n' Ends

Switzerland is an interestingly fun place to visit. Geneva alone promises a lot of places that will you breathless with sheer admiration. The Water Jet (Le Jet dÉau), which is a wall of water, is truly a magnificent sight to look at. It reaches up to a height of 140 metres located in the very middle of Geneva.

There of course the Global Organizations which have chosen Geneva as their headquarters for so many different reasons. You might to visit them, consider this part of your tour as more on education on humanitarian organizations that exist today such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
