The Canberra balloon fiesta is a hot air balloon festival which takes place on the elegant lawns of the old parliamentary house of Canberra. Outside the parliamentary triangle there is pleasure awaiting you in every direction.
The Canberra balloon fiesta takes place annually during the month of march. Every year around 40 hot air balloons representing different participating countries takes part in the fiesta dotting the autumn sky with hot air balloons of different shapes and colours. This ballooning extravaganza has earned itself a spot among the top four hot ballooning events in the world. The event is truly in a league of its own as its one of the only places in the world where the hot air balloons are allowed to fly so close to the government buildings and other structures of national and cultural heritage.
The balloon fiesta is held for around nine days with each day’s festivities beginning at around 6 am. Each day at the break of dawn the pilots begin laying out and inflating their balloons before they go up into the air. All the balloons are navigated by some of the most skilled and experienced pilots in the world. As you float over the city of Canberra in the balloon you can lay your sights on some of the most iconic structures in Australia such as the parliamentary houses, the national museum, war memorial and countless others.
The Canberra balloon fiesta was started in the year 1986. Over the past two and a half decades the sky over the city saw balloons of different colours, shapes and sizes. Balloons were designed to look like kangaroos, giant frogs, beavers, honey bees and also there was one in the shape of Van Gogh’s head.
The sound and colour around the parliamentary triangle awakes the senses of the revellers. The true heart of the city is reflected in the Canberra festival through exhibitions, music, film and dance.
The Canberra balloon festival is known for drawing the most heavy sleepers away from their beds as there is no better way to start an autumn morning than by participating the festivities.
