The Canberra balloon fiesta takes place annually during the month of march. Every year around 40 hot air balloons representing different participating countries takes part in the fiesta dotting the autumn sky with hot air balloons of different shapes and colours. This ballooning extravaganza has earned itself a spot among the top four hot ballooning events in the world. The balloon fiesta is held for around nine days with each day’s festivities beginning at around 6 am. Each day at the break of dawn the pilots begin laying out and inflating their balloons before they go up into the air. All the balloons are navigated by some of the most skilled and experienced pilots in the world. As you float over the city of Canberra in the balloon you can lay your sights on some of the most iconic structures in Australia such as the parliamentary houses, the national museum, war memorial and countless others.

The Canberra balloon fiesta was started in the year 1986. Over the past two and a half decades the sky over the city saw balloons of different colours, shapes and sizes. Balloons were designed to look like kangaroos, giant frogs, beavers, honey bees and also there was one in the shape of Van Gogh’s head.
