The Experience
Revitalize, rest, and rejuvenate during a trip to the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa in Iceland. These healing waters of the spa are full of minerals such as silica and sulfur, which by bathing in eases visitors various medicinal aliments as well as soothes the recreational user. Entirely man made, the Blue Lagoon Spa operates as most of Iceland does in generating power by burrowing deep into the earth. In doing so this causes steam to rise up powering turbines which is then recaptured and pumped into the luxurious lagoon to heat it. The average temperature of the water in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon is 40 °C (104 °F). The Blue Lagoon is surprisingly enjoyable all year round despite being so close to the Arctic Circle, this is due to the Gulf Stream which regulates temperatures in Reykjavik, making it less extreme in winter then that of a typical one in say New York City. Soak away the stress of city life here at the Blue Lagoon Spa and rekindle your relationship with nature as you bask in the scenic beauty of Iceland’s lava fields.
When to Go to Blue Lagoon Spa
The most popular time to visit the Blue Lagoon Spa is July and August as it is the warmest, roads are open, and flowers are in bloom. If you venture out at this time you can expect to pay a premium for your flight and accommodations. Other popular times if you want to miss the chaos of European vacation is April and June. During late June you can experience Reykjavik at the height of solstice where the sun hangs in the sky for 23 out of the 24 hours in a day.
Odds n' Ends
This six million liter Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, only a 20 minute drive from the Keflavik International Airport. The cost of entry is approximately $23 - $30 Canadian depending on what time of year you visit. For this cost visitors can enjoy a stress relief soak, additional amenities such as the waterfall which provides an energizing massage, steam bath located in a lava cave, sauna and silica mud masks to cleanse and exfoliate cost extra. New renovations completed in 2007 built into the surrounding lava cliffs include beautiful new change room facilities and a new restaurant, increasing the complex size by 100%.
